With poultry, use breasts rather than the fattier legs. Always remove the skin.
With eggs, use egg whites more than egg yolks. You can substitute two egg whites for each egg yolk.
With dairy products, try to use low-fat or fat-free versions of milk, yogurt and cheese.
Use low-fat, or no-fat salad dressings on salads.
Use salt as little as you can.
Avoid prepackaged seasoning mixes. They contain a lot of salt. Rather use fresh herbs.
Grind herbs with a mortar and pestle for the best flavor.
Add dried herbs like thyme, rosemary and marjoram to dishes for a stronger flavor taking care that you use them sparingly.
Vinegar and citrus juice are great flavor enhancers, but use them in the end; vinegar on vegetables and citrus on fruits.
You can use dry mustard while cooking if you prefer a piquant flavor.
To add a little spice, you can also add a few fresh hot peppers. Remove the membrane and seeds first, then finely chop them up.
Use liquid vegetable oils that are lowest in saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol – such as canola oil, corn oil, olive oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil – but still use them sparingly.
Try to avoid coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil; they are high in saturated fats.
Avoid frying foods. You can tastefully use other ways like stir-frying, roasting, grilling, baking, poaching, sauteing or steaming instead of deep frying without sacrificing any taste!
